Adjectives gender

We have aldready seen how to change a noun from its masculine form to its feminine form, also adjectives change their gender according to the noun they modify. Usually adjectives in catalan go after the noun they refer to.
Let’s see now how to change the gender of catalan adjectives.

  • If the adjective ends with a consonant you have to add -a at the end.

Alt (tall) Alta (tall)
Prim (slim) Prima (slim)
Llarg (long) Llarga (long)
Bonic (beautiful) Bonica (beautiful)
  • If the adjectives end in -o, you have to change this o with an a.
Examples

Maco (beautiful, nice) Maca (beautiful, nice)
Guapo (handsome) Guapa (beautiful)
  • If the adjective ends in -í, you have to change this í with the suffix -ina.

There are a few exceptions.

  • If the masculine adjective ends in l you have to add ·la.

  • If the masculine adjective ends in -ig it can change to -ja or -tja.

Boig (crazy) Boja (crazy)
Lleig (ugly) Lletja (ugly)
  • If the masculine adjective ends in -ix you will have to add -eda.

  • Furthermore, there are some adjectives that have the same form for the masculine and the feminine, these are the adjectives that end with “ble”, “al”, “ant”, or simply “e”.
