Catalan nouns number

Els substantius (nouns) or noms (names) indicate people, animals, things and ideas.

Let’s see how you can change the number of a noun.

  • You have to add an s to the singular form.
Examples
Singular Plural
Home (man) Homes (men)

  • If the noun ends with an unstressed -a you have to change this vowel with -es.
Examples

Dia (day) Dies (days)
Roca (rock, boulder) Roques (rocks, boulders)
  • If it ends with a stressed vowel you have to add the suffix -ns.
Examples

Mà (hand) Mans (hands)
Cosí (cousin) Cosins (cousins)
Carbó (coal) Carbons (coals)
Pi (pine-tree) Pins (pine-trees)
  • Sometimes yoû have to add -os.
